Modelling context in information brokering processes

چکیده
The availability of increasing amounts of information on the World Wide Web generates problems of information overload, that lead to increasing efforts for information retrieval on the one hand and increasing portions of irrelevant information on the other (see e.g. [Lawrence & Giles 1999; Lueg & Riedl 2001]). Research efforts address these problems (e.g. [Ho & Tang 2001; Berghel 1997]). However, there is still a lack of common understanding of information brokering processes, tasks, and roles. Additionally, existing systems do not account for the meaning of context for information needs: while the importance of context for information needs is agreed on in the literature, a common framework for understanding, organising, and using contextual knowledge explicitly within information brokering processes is still missing. The central question underlying this work is the following: when we know about the context in which a person is currently situated and we know the context in or for which available information has been produced, how can we then use this knowledge to improve the individual’s access to information? To address this question, this work performs a comprehensive analysis of information brokering processes in various domains and develops information brokering process, role, and task models of general applicability. Furthermore, the role context plays within these processes is analysed and a framework of contextualisation goals and appropriate contextualisation techniques is developed. Finally, a general context modelling framework is developed based on the definition of context modelling requirements. This context modelling framework provides guidelines for the explicit representation, assessment, and retrieval of contextual information in order to enhance information brokering processes with contextual information. The models proposed in this work are evaluated through the development of several information brokering environments and their application in different information brokering domains.

ICEBERG: Exploiting Context in Information Brokering Agents
The research reported in this paper has both a scientific and a commercial aim. The scientific interest is to explore the use of contexts in order to improve the quality of information brokering. In this paper it is shown that contexts in information brokering can be exploited to enable four directions of query reformulation: up and down (standard query expansion) and sideway reformulations of ...
متن کاملApplication of Stochastic Optimal Control, Game Theory and Information Fusion for Cyber Defense Modelling
The present paper addresses an effective cyber defense model by applying information fusion based game theoretical approaches. In the present paper, we are trying to improve previous models by applying stochastic optimal control and robust optimization techniques. Jump processes are applied to model different and complex situations in cyber games. Applying jump processes we propose some m...
متن کاملSemantic Brokering over Dynamic Heterogeneous Data Sources in InfoSleuth
InfoSleuth1 is an agent-based system for information discovery and retrieval in an open and dynamically changing environment. It implements a brokering function which combines reasoning over both the advertised syntax and semantics of agents in the InfoSleuth domain. The brokering function in a distributed or agent-based system matches processes requiring a service (requesters) with processes t...
متن کاملAgent-Oriented Privacy-Based Information Brokering Architecture for Healthcare Environments
Healthcare industry is facing a major reform at all levels-locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Healthcare services and systems become very complex and comprise of a vast number of components (software systems, doctors, patients, etc.) that are characterized by shared, distributed and heterogeneous information sources with varieties of clinical and other settings. The challenge...
متن کاملSemantic Brokering over Dynamic Heterogeneous Data Sources in InfoSleuthTM
InfoSleuthis an agent-based system for information discovery and retrieval in a dynamic, open environment. This paper discusses InfoSleuth's multibroker design and implementation. InfoSleuth's brokering function combines reasoning over both the syntax and semantics of agents in the domain. The broker must reason over explicitly advertised information about agent capabilities to determine which ...
